If i try to upload a Time Machine back up, i t fails with an error message that while wiping the target disk an error occurred. Using Thunderbolt to the MacBook Pro again, with Disk Utility I can see that it contains only about 0.5TB of data - all my main account stuff has NOT been transferred - which probably explains why the password doesn't work. Now my password for my main account no longer works!!! I then re-attempted to upload the Time Machine backup. After checking my entitlement to this, Apple downloaded the OS again.

Using Disk Utility, I erased the iMac HD and then re-started the iMac using Command-T to download the Mac OS afresh. Via Thunderbolt, I started the iMac with "Command-T" linked to my MacBook Pro. However, when I opened my main account, it was completely empty - no files! I tried various things and finally it started for me. When I switched it on, that window disappeared instead it offered me the choice of uploading a backup from Time Machine, etc. The next day when I awoke it from sleep by tapping the space bar, it told me all had been completed and I should click to button to continue. It told me it would take around 30 hours. I clicked "continue" or whatever the button said and it began transfer. It scanned through my files and listed them, showing a tick by each file -including the one for my main account (where most of the data is) though that did not list a size and at the bottom of the window it still said "calculating size". I clicked on the latest Time Machine back up and it began calculating the size of the various files. When my iMac was returned (after two weeks!), I started it and it asked me if I wanted to up load a Time Machine back up. I had Time Machine back ups on my RAID HD.

My late 2012 27" iMac was recalled to Apple for free replacement of the 3TB HD (due to known issues).
